FLA Awards Recipients 2011
The Florida Library Association is pleased to announce the winners of its 2011 awards. Recipients were recognized for their achievements during the FLA Annual Conference held May 4-6 at the Doubletree Hotel at the Entrance to Universal in Orlando, Florida
Best Booth Award
- Combined Book Exhibit received a plaque for the best booth at the 2010 annual conference.
- Backstage Library Works was recognized for the best booth at the 2011conference and will be honored with a plaque at the 2012 conference.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. Richard Madaus and Loretta Flowers
Presented to Dr. Madaus for a 40 year-long career dedicated to the improvement and advancement of library services; and to Loretta Flowers, who has been a part of the State Division of Library and Information Services since 1982.
Library Leader of the Year
Diana Silveira
Presented to Diana Silveira, Chair of the FLA 2011 Conference Committee.
Librarian of the Year Award
Paul Clark
Presented to Paul Clark with a standing ovation. Affectionately known as "The Library Guy," Clark's advocacy efforts are the stuff of legend.
Library of the Year Award
Parkland Public Library
Presented to Parkland Public Library for initiating a series of unique programs that focused on serving older adults. Accepting the award for Parkland Public Library was Edenia Hernandez.
Maria Chavez-Hernandez Libraries Change Peoples Lives Award
Pinellas Public Library Cooperative
Presented to the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative’s Deaf Literacy Center, a library-based literacy program for Deaf individuals and their family members who need basic literacy and life skills. Accepting the award was Rosa Rodriguez.
Friends Foundations and Boards Outstanding Member Award
Evelyn Grooms
Presented to Evelyn Grooms, Broward County Library who, as President of of the Friends of Broward County Library, Inc. 2004 – 2010 developed the organization into a team of over 2,000 library advocates to create public awareness of libraries.
Public Library Web Site Award
Lee County Library System
Presented to the Lee County Library System for their innovatively redesigned website that provides a rich and deep user experience. Accepting the award was Marilyn Graham.
Exemplary Learning Design Award
Jacalyn Bryan and Elana Karshmer
Presented to Jacalyn Bryan and Elana Karshmer, Saint Leo University for creating an engaging and motivational library orientation session as part of a three credit course for all first-year and transfer students.
Library Innovation Award
Orange County Library System
Presented to the Orange County Library System for their Right Service at the Right Time Web Service. Accepting the award was Library Director Mary Anne Hodel.
Outstanding Business/Media Partner Award
Miami Dolphin Foundation
Presented to the Miami Dolphin Foundation who has provided funding, game tickets, and prizes to support the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program for more than 10 years. Accepting the award was Ilona Wolpin, Senior Director of Community Relations, Miami Dolphins.
Libraries Mean Business Award (a new FLA Award for 2011)
Alachua County Library District
Presented to the Alachua County Library District for their collaboration with the Florida Works One Stop Career Center to bring job searching and resume writing programs to its branches. Accepting the award was Shaney Livingston.
