Photographs & Partnerships: Finding Connections between Academic & Public Libraries

Discover how a public library and an academic library used a highly renowned photograph collection from the 1800s and 1900s to create a stronger partnership between the two institutions. The two libraries ran nine events in 2017 based on this collection. The scheduled events included walking tours where customers could see the past through the photos and the present by standing on the exact spot where the photo was taken. This partnership allowed these two libraries to reinvigorate an important societal resource and increase community awareness of this historic treasure. Presenters will share concepts and methods to assist librarians in creating and strengthening partnerships in their community. They will discuss how these types of partnerships can help in marketing the services provided at each institution. The presenters will lead a brainstorming session in which participants reference a neighboring cultural institution near their location and discuss the services or materials each has in common to see how this could create or strengthen a partnership while expanding the services provided in that community.
