2020 Poster Sessions
Fast Forward to Multigenerational Programming

Intended Audience

Public Libraries, Community Engagement & Programming Departments, Marketing & Media Departments

Poster Summary and Objectives

In an effort to incorporate diversity and inclusion into our branch’s programming schedule, we have been experimenting with hosting events that are engaging for multiple generations. Our primary goals are to nurture communication and acceptance amongst different generations, increase program attendance, and offer unique programming to our patrons, all while maintaining a tight budget. Our secondary goals include having different departments work together as one team to produce, market, and implement said programs. We are accomplishing this through a collaborative effort between adult and youth services.

Due to being a departmentally driven library, our programming has typically been split into the silos of children, teen, and adult programs. Although we still primarily offer single generational programs, we are pleased by the results of our experiment and will continue to offer multigenerational programs.

As with any new endeavor, we encountered challenges along the way. We have embraced these challenges in order to learn about our patrons wants and needs, thus improving our services. Our poster will include our goals in respect to this type of programming, examples of the programs we have implemented, the outcome of those programs, challenges, benefits of hosting multigenerational programs, feedback received from program participants, and recommendations for other libraries pursuing similar goals.
