The Information Literacy Constellation: Understanding by Design as a Model to Integrate Frames and Standards

ACRL has an expansive set of information literacy documents; however, with the approval of the Framework and rescinding of the Standards, that "constellation" has shifted. How can librarians develop programs that are guided by professional standards and guidelines while reflecting local context and needs? Drawing on "Understanding by Design" (Wiggins and McTigue), this webinar provide guidance for librarians who are stepping up to the challenge “to be imaginative and innovative in implementing the Framework” (http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/ilframeworkapps#suggestions).

Learning Outcomes:

• Participants will be able to determine the roles of standards and frameworks in their information literacy practices and programs.
• Participants will be able to apply the Understanding by Design approach to designing information literacy instruction.
• Participants will be able to assess student learning guided by the Understanding by Design continuum of assessments.

Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe is Professor/Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction in the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as an affiliate faculty member in the university’s library school. Lisa is a past-president of the Association of College and Research Libraries, which launched the Value of Academic Libraries Initiative during her presidency. Along with Debra Gilchrist, Lisa is also the lead designer for ACRL’s training program for the Standards for Libraries in Higher Education and the IMLS-funded Assessment in Action project. Lisa has presented and published widely on information literacy, teaching and learning, the value of academic libraries and library assessment, evaluation, and innovation. Her most recent book is Environments for Student Growth and Development: Libraries and Student Affairs in Collaboration (co-edited with Melissa Autumn Wong).
