Embedded Librarianship – Experiences from Academic and Public Libraries

Speakers: Robbie Allen and Janet McNaughton of Palm Beach State College with Jayme Bosio of the Palm Beach County Library System

Each panelist will provide 10 - 15 minutes of content, and allow for questions and comments from attendees

Attendees will learn about:

 The benefits and challenges of instituting an embedded librarian program in a public library setting;
 How to recruit and assess appropriate projects for their embedded librarian program;
 Using web conferencing tools for providing synchronous reference help;
 Outreach needed to begin an embedded librarian program;
 Using the embedded experience to address textbook affordability and textbook alternatives.

About the panelists:

Associate Professor Robbie Allen is a librarian at Palm Beach State College. He served as the embedded librarian in Palm Beach State College’s baccalaureate programs from 2012 to 2016. He currently serves on the college’s eLearning Advisory Committee and continues to be a liaison to various departments. He is also working on a second master’s in Instructional Design and Technology at the University of Central Florida.

Jayme Bosio has been the Government Research Services Librarian for the Palm Beach County Library System since June 2014. She has been a facilitator for the Embedded Librarian Program since its inception in February 2015. During the program’s first year, 9 librarians were paired with 8 county departments to provide research on a variety of topics from “What are the benefits of using turf grass in parks?” to “The pros and cons of the Cuba embargo”. The Embedded Librarian Program won the Urban
Libraries Council 2015 Top Innovators award for Civic and Community Engagement.

Associate Professor Janet Naughton is a Reference and Instructional Librarian at Palm Beach State College, Lake Worth Campus. She serves as the college’s second embedded librarian for the baccalaureate programs, including Information Management, Supervision Management and Nursing Supervision Management. Janet also serves on the FLA Awards Committee.
