Hello esteemed colleagues, partners in learning, and fellow advocates. It is with immense honor and deep commitment that I stand before you today as the incoming president of the Florida Library Association. We gather at a pivotal moment—not only in the history of our libraries, but in the lives of every individual whose story adds to the rich tapestry of our shared profession.

Our theme for this term is “Tell Your Story”—a call that transcends the act of narration, transforming it into a powerful tool for advocacy. Every one of us carries a unique narrative forged by experiences, challenges, and passions. When we speak our truth, we do more than share words; we illuminate our paths, nurture empathy, and inspire transformation. In our libraries, these stories become the bedrock of intellectual freedom and community resilience.

Advocacy, at its essence, is about standing up for the rights and voices of those who might otherwise be unheard. Each story you tell peels back another layer of silence, inviting those around you to see the world with fresh eyes and renewed hope. By centering our narratives, we turn libraries into sanctuaries of truth and empowerment. Every book shelved, every digital archive created, and every community conversation held is an act of advocacy—a testament to our unwavering commitment to free expression and access to knowledge.

As leaders, librarians, and community champions, we must leverage our platforms to ensure that every voice is amplified. Our libraries are more than repositories of information; they are communal spaces where the seeds of justice are sown and nurtured through shared experiences. When we tell our stories, we advocate not only for ourselves but for our communities, reinforcing the belief that every individual deserves to be seen, heard, and understood.

This commitment to storytelling and advocacy transcends policy debates and funding discussions—it is rooted in the daily dedication of every library professional who walks through our doors. I invite you to harness your personal narrative as a source of power, resilience, and change. Let your words echo the values of intellectual freedom and community connection that define our mission. As we move forward this term, let us pledge to cultivate an environment where every story contributes to the broader narrative of progress and where advocacy remains at the heart of our work.

In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude to all who have paved the way for this moment—from our seasoned leaders and passionate volunteers to the vibrant communities we serve. Our collective stories are more than memories; they are the drivers of change. Let’s keep the conversation alive, keep the stories flowing, and, above all, let’s continue our essential work of advocating for a future where every voice has the power to shape our shared destiny.
