Food for Thought: Increasing Culinary Literacy in Public Libraries

Intended Audience

Public Libraries, Community Engagement & Programming Departments, Library Leadership

Poster Summary and Objectives

Food brings people together. Culinary literacy as we define it at Regency Park Library in Pasco County, Florida takes that togetherness to another level, developing people’s knowledge of cooking and allowing them to become more comfortable in kitchen settings and with various types of cuisine.

Presenters

Mary Kate Downing- Pasco County Library System, Regency Park Library
Tracy Blimes- Pasco County Library System, Regency Park Library

Both Tracy Blimes and Mary Kate Downing have worked to establish, build, and market the Regency Fresh Test Kitchen makerspace at Regency Park Library over the past few years. Each one of them has played a variety of roles related to culinary literacy at their library, from surveying patrons on their makerspace interests, to ordering equipment and buying supplies for their decided-upon test kitchen makerspace, to designing the makerspace, to holding a grand opening for the makerspace, and finally to scheduling, presenting, and marketing programs in the makerspace.
